It’s all about boats

Love boats? The East End is rich in maritime history – and you can explore lots of it via the DLR. On our visit we started out at St Katharine Docks, not far from Tower Gateway.

It’s a little hidden gem away from the bustle around Tower Bridge and lovely to wander around. It’s the marina closest to central London and in season, has lots of boats moored which gives it a sense of the seaside in the capital. The Dickens Inn is a fabulous 18th century docks warehouse next to the marina that has been restored and you can enjoy food and drink here in the beamed restaurants.

The DLR is 30 this year

This month, the DLR turns 30. Regarded as a novelty when it was first opened by Her Majesty The Queen in 1987, the driverless light railway has had front seat views of the changing landscape in east London. Today, the area is a vibrant, thriving part of London packed with well-known attractions and hidden gems.

To mark the 30th anniversary and to help you explore and discover the Docklands and east London, TfL has launched Destination DLR – 30 things to do via the Docklands Light Railway.
