Finding new and interesting ways to keep active, get your daily steps in or simply clear your mind can be tricky. We caught up with some of our colleagues to find out what they’ve been doing to mix up their daily routines.

Here’s some inspiring ways to start walking in London 👇

Substitute your commute

Use your commute as an excuse to get your daily step count up. If you can, try walking some or all of your journey.

Check our handy maps for journeys that could be quicker to walk and walking times between Tube and Rail stations.

If you’re working from home, you could try using that extra time during your day to get outside and enjoy your neighbourhood. 🏡

“Being based temporarily at a different Tube station in London, I have seized this as an opportunity to enjoy the sights of an emptier city. The 4.5 mile walk from St Pancras to Ladbroke Grove passes Euston Square, Baker Street and the scenic Paddington Basin before finishing off in the tree-lined streets of Notting Hill.” 🏙️

Tom – London Underground

“I have always enjoyed walking so when lockdown started, I was keen to keep up a similar number of steps. To get me into a routine, I decided to start my daily exercise at the same time. I would typically leave the house and spend the equivalent time of my normal commute walking or jogging round the local green space.” 🚶

Julie – TfL Pensions

“My commute has now been replaced with a 10km loop walk in the morning before logging in for work at home. It’s just amazing how the same walk can differ depending on your mood, weather or the traffic. The best bits for me are turning off a busy main road to find a tree-lined private street where there is literally no traffic and you can enjoy the birdsong.” 🐦

We’re talking wildflowers! There’s lots of beautiful green spaces in London. There’s probably one waiting to be discovered just a short walk from you. 💐

“I’ve started letting the dog walk me – no route, I just follow where he wants to go. I’m lucky to live next to Wimbledon common. I recently discovered lots of new paths, routes and ponds I need to drag the dog out of!” 🐕

Amy – Public Affairs and External Relations

“Walking, exploring and losing myself in nature has been a great way to exercise and disconnect. It’s an excuse to discover the Hermitage to Hampstead Norreys green route – a derelict railway track which has boards with inspiring messages dotted along the route. Such a nice touch!” 🚂

Maria – London Underground

“Long walks were something I never considered before lockdown, but I am so glad I gave them a go. I’ve found some amazing parks, nature reserves and places I never knew about. It’s been great for my wellbeing and definitely something I will keep up.” 🍃

“My smart watch was great for motivating me to stand or give me a little nudge to go for a walk while being away from the office. On my walks, I make the point to take different routes. I like to make sure I take a photo to look back on when the weather isn’t so great.” ⌚Michael – Learning and Development

“I’m seeing much more of my local neighbourhood, discovering places I’ve never even seen before, and I’ve lived here for almost 10 years! I’m just a few minutes’ walk from the Thames Path. It’s a real treat to watch the sun setting across the river’s surface, I recommend it!” 🌇 Chantel – Technology and Data

“I have been taking the time to be mindful when out walking. Trying to notice how the trees move in the breeze, feel how my skin cools with the breeze and enjoy the birdsong. Cultivating a mood of contentment helps get me through those low moments.” 💡

“As an active person, lockdown was even more challenging mentally. However, gentle walks through the idyllic South Downs in West Sussex, where I live really helped me through this challenging time. It made me realise exercise doesn’t have to be vigorous. Walks with rolling hills as far as the eye can see, clear blue skies, birdsong and the floral scent of honeysuckle and gorse have been a wonderful escapism and helped keep me balanced. It goes to show that even the simplest of activity can do wonders for the body, mind and soul. I’d encourage anyone to take to nature and enjoy the benefits a gentle stroll can bring.” 🌳

Hayley – London Underground

“I would have normally paced enough throughout the morning to hit my steps target for the day by lunchtime. Working from home, it’s a good walk at lunchtime that’s needed to do that, which is great to help clear my head and set me up for the afternoon ahead.” 🚶
