What’s going on in London? – walking and cycling

There are a variety of major events in London throughout the year. These events are a great opportunity to enjoy traffic-free roads and walk or cycle part of your journey. 🚶🚴


  • 9 June – London Nocturne 🚲
    This cycling event in the City caters for amateurs and elites
  • 17 June – London to Brighton
    This bike ride starts in Clapham Common and heads south
  • 16 – 17 June – West End Live 🎭

  • 4 – 5 August – London Triathlon 🏊‍♂️
    Take on the largest Triathlon in the world, from East London to Westminster
  • 11 – 13 August – Brixton Wave Festival 💃
    Discover Brixton through food and music at this new south London festival.
  • 26 – 27 August – Notting Hill Carnival
    Enjoy Europe’s biggest street party, covering Notting Hill, Latimer Road and Ladbroke Grove


  • 9 September – Hackney Carnival 💃
    Costumes, dance and music in the centre of Hackney
  • 2 – 9 September – Tour of Britain cycle 🚲
    This cycling race will be running through London in early September
  • 22-23 September – Open House Weekend
    This architecture festival gives free public access to over 800 buildings in London
  • 30 September – Ealing Half Marathon 🏃
    Get your trainers on for this running event in the centre of Ealing


  • 14 October – Royal Parks Half Marathon 🏃
    This half marathon will take you through Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens, St James’ Park and Green Park



  • 31 December – New Year’s Eve Fireworks 🎆
    As Londoner’s and visitors bring in the New Year, there will be road closures throughout central London

There are free walking events are happening throughout the London all summer, these are some of the highlights in June:

Fitbit Walking Challenge
4 – 17 June

This two week step challenge will get you feeling good and doing good. Cover as much distance as you can  to help raise money and for the chance to win.

Saddle and Sole Festival of Cycling and Walking
17 June, 12 – 6pm
Finsbury Park

This free family fun festival will include lots of walking and cycling activities, information and advice. Stalls on offer include free cycle racing, cycle training, fun try-out bikes, fun walks, as well as family fun activities including a bouncy castle, face painting and badminton.

Across London

The London Curriculum is a fun way of teaching young people about the city, using London as a classroom. They’ve recently created a new Women of Courage walking trail.

Free cycling events are happening throughout the London all summer. Below are some of the highlights in June.

Tour de Waltham Forest
24 June 
Waltham Forest

Starting from Leyton Jubilee Park, you can pick one of three routes: a leisurely 7.5km cycle, a 12km tour or an adventurous 18km ride. Registration is free!

Women’s Institute Warm-up Ride
9 June, 2 – 3.30pm
Valentine’s Park

Join the Newham Cyclists for a short spin to Valentine’s Park and back, along Quietway 6.
